A New Equational Foundation for the Fluent Calculus Stream: Knowledge Representation and Non-monotonic Reasoning
نویسنده
چکیده
A new equational foundation is presented for the Fluent Calculus , an established predicate calculus formalism for reasoning about actions. We discuss limitations of the existing axiomatizations of both equality of states and what it means for a uent to hold in a state. Our new and conceptually even simpler theory is shown to overcome the restrictions of the existing approach. We prove that the correctness of the Fluent Calculus as a solution to the Frame Problem still holds under the new foundation. Furthermore, we extend our theory by an induction axiom needed for reasoning about integer-valued resources.

متن کاملExecution mechanisms for the action language C+
The action language C+ of Giunchiglia, Lee, Lifschitz, McCain and Turner, is the most recent and expressive member of a family of knowledge representation formalisms for reasoning about action and change over time. However, frequently the reasoning proceeds very inefficiently, for large domains collapsing altogether; most often the reason for this is that in determining the truth of a fluent at...
متن کاملIs Intractability of Non-Monotonic Reasoning a Real Drawback?
Several studies about computational complexity of nonmonotonic reasoning (NMR) showed that nonmonotonic inference is significantly harder than classical, monotonic inference. This contrasts with the general idea that NMR can be used to make knowledge representation and reasoning simpler, not harder. In this paper we show that, to some extent, NMR fulfills the representation goal. In particular,...
متن کاملContinuous Processes in the Fluent Calculus
Among the known predicate calculus formalisms for axiomatizing commonsense reasoning about actions, the Fluent Calculus stands out in offering a solution not only to the representational but also the inferential aspect of the fundamental Frame Problem. In this paper we extend this formalism to modeling hybrid systems, which involve both discrete and continuous change. We borrow basic notions fr...
متن کاملQualitative Interpolation for Environmental Knowledge Representation
Environmental Knowledge Representation is concerned with representing and reasoning about the environments within which intelligent agents operate. To understand an environment is to have command of a structured model in which important features are highlighted and their mutual interrelations made available for inference. Such knowledge is largely qualitative: to understand an environment it is...
